Your first visit begins with an in-depth assessment of your condition and your initial
treatment. During the assessment we may ask you about some things that you might not think
are connected to your chief complaint, for example, thoughts and emotions,
sleeping patterns, and eating habits.
We ask that you arrive at our office at least twenty minutes prior to your scheduled appointment so that we can ensure all medicine intake forms. This enables us understand your current symptoms and past history.
In general, 90% of insurances don't cover acupuncture. If you happen to work for a
large company they may offer it as an addendum or rider to your policy. Employers
usually don't offer it because your premiums will increase. The health insurance
companies that have covered it for our patients are some Federal Blue Cross/ Blue
Shield and the State of NJ (NJ Direct) policies. The companies that do not cover
acupuncture are Medicare, Medigap, Medicaid, Champus, Tricare, and UFSHP.
We recommend that you call the member number on the back of your insurance card
and ask if you have "out of network benefits for acupuncture". If you do have
coverage the insurance company will tell you exactly what those benefits are.
Coverage for acupuncture is generally for pain management (i.e. back pain, joint
pain and headaches) along with nausea from pregnancy or chemotherapy. They will
not cover treatment for weight control, cosmetic or smoking cessation.
